Question 2

What is a good field goal percentage in the NBA?

Accepted Answer

The NBA league average FG% is typically around 46–48%. A FG% above 50% is considered strong; above 55% is excellent; above 60% is elite — typically achieved by players who take a high proportion of shots within five feet of the basket. Three-point-heavy shooters often post lower FG% (44–47%) despite excellent efficiency per shot. True shooting percentage (TS%) provides a better comparison across different shot diets.

Question 3

How does field goal percentage affect NBA prop betting?

Accepted Answer

High FG% players are taking the highest-quality shots from the most efficient positions. For points props, FG% leaders who also post high scoring averages represent a combination of volume and efficiency that produces consistent output. A player whose FG% is declining mid-season — visible in game log data on their Statz player page — may be struggling with shot selection, which is a sell signal on their points props even if their PPG average has not dropped yet.

Question 4

What is the difference between FG%, eFG% and TS%?

Accepted Answer

FG% = Made field goals / Attempted field goals — does not weight three-pointers. eFG% = (FGM + 0.5 × 3PM) / FGA — adjusts for the extra value of three-pointers. TS% = Points / (2 × (FGA + 0.44 × FTA)) — the most complete efficiency measure, adjusting for both three-pointers and free throws. For prop research, raw FG% is most useful for identifying high-percentage scorers who operate primarily near the basket.
