Defensive rebounds per game measures how often a player secures missed shots from the opposing team. DREB comprises the majority of a player's total rebound figure — typically 70–75% of all rebounds are defensive. Skilled defensive rebounders use positioning, timing and size to control the glass and prevent second-chance opportunities. Starting centres and power forwards who play 30+ minutes consistently lead DREB. Players averaging 8+ DREB per game are typically the primary rebounder for their team and occupy central roles in their defensive scheme.
Defensive rebounds are the most predictable component of a player's total rebound count. Because DREB doesn't require the same high-risk positioning as offensive rebounds, elite defensive rebounders are consistent from game to game — their output is more stable than almost any other counting stat.
